Q Conclusions Review: What should you avoid in your conclusion? Don’t repeat the thesis statement word for word. Avoid saying “in conclusion,” “in summary,” and such Don’t add another new idea (if you do make that a new body paragraph). Not too short. Don’t just repeat your essay points in the conclusion. Use a concluding technique. Restatement of Your Thesis. Quick Refresher: What is the thesis? = Main idea Where is it? = at the end of the introduction Step 1: Review your main idea Read over the ideas in your body paragraphs. Look back at your thesis statement at the end of your introduction. Step 2: Write Use the quick refresher to now write 1-2 sentences to come back to the main point of your essay. Do not repeat your thesis statement verbatim (In other words, use other words to restate your thesis). Review of Concluding Techniques: Reinforce the larger significance of the discussion by showing your readers why the essay was important, meaningful and/or useful—answer the question “so what?” Push a strong opinion that the reader may not have accepted before reading your essay. End with a personal story connected to the topic. More Concluding Techniques: Propose a course of action. Some of you have talked about a problem and/or a problem and solution(s); now how can those solutions be put into place? Make a prediction/challenge the reader to look to the future with regards to your particular topic. End with a quotation that amplifies your point (This conclusion is not a place to provide more evidence or discuss more evidence! If you end with a quote be careful!) Decide on Your Concluding Technique: Which concluding technique (or mix of) do you think will work best for your WA3? Any of the options in C or D are excellent.
